Mod DB and Doomworld are your best sources for mods and wads. Not all of them are compatible with each other, Brutal Doom doesn't work with everything, but generally will run with most map packs.īD tends to not play nice with stuff that adds custom weapons or monsters, because it does both of those things. Load order does matter, so if you're having trouble launching multiple mods, try changing the load order, and then try removing mods. Then, add any mods, map packs you want to run to the left side under external files.ĭoom II has all the files from Doom in it, and just adds more stuff, so unless you want to play the original Doom levels, there's no reason to use Doom as your base Iwad.īrutal Doom works with either, it's just a matter of what level set you want to play through. You don't even have to move them from where they are installed, just let ZDL know where they are so they show up on the list. Once it's open add the exe for GZDoom under "General Settings", then go back to Launch Config and under IWADs point it to where your Doom and Doom II wad files are.

Winrar will bug you about buying it when you open it, but the "free trial" lasts forever.īasically, how this works is that you install GZDoom's latest version and ZDL, and then open ZDL. Most Doom mods are downloaded as zip files, so you'll probably need something like Winrar to unzip them. I also highly recommend downloading and using ZDL to launch it and organize any mods you decide to use. If you're running Brutal Doom GZDoom is probably what you want to go with. So if you just want to try Brutal Doom out for free, you can with that.

That's nine free levels, but the full game is 36 levels, including secret levels. There is a freeware version of Doom available, but it only contains the first episode of the first game. You probably don't need to do that though as I'll explain. The wad files are not copy protected, you can just copy them anywhere and use them with any source port once you have them. You can buy Doom 3 BFG edition and use the Doom and Doom II wad files included with that, or you can buy Ultimate Doom and/or Doom II through Steam. That is the only purchase you need to make to play, everything else is free.
You need the Doom or Doom II files, which involves buying a legitimate copy of Doom and/or Doom II. Brutal Doom is a mod designed to run on source ports.
